Cody Roedner defeated Matt Krueger 234-212 to win the MAST season opener at Bowl-A-Vard Saturday. Roedner qualified 4th with 988, then averaged over 228 in his four matches en route to the win. This was Roedner’s first career MAST title.

Roedner earned $602 for the win. Krueger took home $336 for second. The other match play payouts Saturday were $214 for 3rd-4th, $162 for 5th-8th, and $118 for 9th-16th. MAST also paid one additional cash spot of $66 for 17th place (Paul Bloemer, 919).

67 bowlers turned out to compete on the 2017-18 MBA City Tournament pattern. After four games of qualifying the cut to the 16th and final qualifying spot was 926. Steven Berndt led qualifying at 1026; he will receive an additional 25 points in the M & J Truck and Auto Points Race.

The pattern yielded a pair of honor counts on the day. Alex Leeman started out his qualifying set with a 300 game, and nearly duplicated that effort with a 298 in game four on the way to qualifying second (1008). Defending champion David Beres also opened qualifying with a 300 game; his bid to repeat as champ ended in the semifinals with a 191-167 loss to Krueger.

New MAST tour sponsor Bob Holzbauer and Phoenix Pro Shop donated a Storm® Intense Fire bowling ball at cost, won by Dave Labinski. Phoenix also donated a Roto Grip® four-ball rolling bag, won by Todd Kjell. Host center Bowl-A-Vard provided a lineage discount and added four $10 gift cards, won by Sean Gibson, Brian Hoffman, Chris Pounders and Jeff Sweeney. Combined proceeds added $279 to the tournament prize fund. MAST extends a huge Thank You to Phoenix Pro Shop and Bowl-A-Vard for their generosity.
