Unofficial Final Standings and Prize List
There were a few leader board changes the final week in doubles as a number of the area's top bowlers came to compete in the last shifts of the minor events. MBA Hall of Fame member Jim Fosdick paired up with son Tim Fosdick to take over the scratch doubles event lead with 1,415. Jim shot 737 and Tim added 678. The score was temporarily the overall top scratch score for doubles as well. On the last shift of the tournament, Division 1 bowlers Jon O'Konek and Matt Lajter of Waunakee stormed in with scores of 725 and 691, respectively, to edge the Fosdicks out for the doubles title. The effort was also 189 pins over average and plenty to vault them into first place in Division 1.
One Division Leader Change and it's a RECORD!
When Middleton Sport Bowl was announced as the host of the Team Event for the 2010 MBA Championship Tournament, many anticipated a new MBA team series record would be recorded. Turbo 2-N-1 Grips posted the current record of 3,713 just last year at the team event at Rude's Lanes. Over the first 14 shifts scores were pretty good, they were just not record setting good. The penultimate weekend was marked by higher scores when three Division 2 teams took over the top three spots and a new leader emerged in Division 1 team as well. A sign of things to come perhaps?
A pair of MBA Hall of Fame members provided a very dramatic title match in the 2nd annual MBA Masters tournament at Bowling Green. 2009 inductee Kevin Thompson outlasted tournament leader and 2008 inductee Marc McDowell 236-222. The match was dead even after the first four frames; both bowlers putting up the first four strikes. It remained even through five when both bowlers lost the pocket but converted seven count spares. The close match continued with both players putting up doubles late - Thompson's going into the 10th frame. In the end, Thompson needed nine on his first ball for the win.
Huge Team Scores Highlight Week Five
There are new leaders in Division 1 and Division 2 Team event following this weekend's action as four of nine teams best previous scoring leaders. In Division 1, Ten Pin Alley's 5th Quarter Team 3 rolled 345 pins over their team average to take the top spot. The 1029 average team started out with a decent but not overwhelming game of 1072. They blew away the field with their very impressive games of 1200 and 1160. Carrie Poole was highest over average at +90. Team captain Nick Schultz threw a 716 and Cory Crose added 703.
Paul Bober won his first MAST title by defeating Chris Pounders, 202 to 170, in the final game of match play. Bober earned $528 while Pounders received $264 as runner up. Wildcat Lanes put down a challenging condition, which resulted in a score of only 822 to make the cut. Mike Hoffman shot 916 to earn 25 extra bonus points as the lead qualifier among 59 bowlers. The tournament attracted bowlers from Milwaukee and Chicago as well as a number of house bowlers. The tournament was sponsored by Wildcat lanes and Badger Pro Shop.
Hoffman and Blanchar Win 2nd Doubles Title
As occurred just months earlier at the Cambridge doubles tournament, Mike Hoffman and Ron Blanchar met Mike Christian and Justin Fryer in the title match. With the match being tied after the 8th frame, Hoffman and Blanchar went on to win 475 to 461. Hoffman dominated match play with games of 268, 269, and 275, for an 812 series. Hoffman and Blanchar each received $520 for the win while Christian and Fryer each received $260 for second place.
